My Roots

I was drawn to finance and investing from childhood.

Inspired by my mother (the household money manager), I opened my own IRA while still a teenager. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Consumer Economics from the University of Georgia, with an emphasis on family financial planning; gained experience working for another independent advisory firm after graduation; and founded Troika Capital while still in my mid-20s. I began my career at a wealth management firm in Athens, Georgia, as the Director of Financial Planning, managing portfolios for high-net-worth individuals and specializing in portfolio management. I worked with small businesses to help implement their qualified and non-qualified retirement plans and took part in several private equity deals designed to raise capital and unite the desires of business owners and investors.

Georgia on my mind

When I started Troika Capital,

there weren’t many independent, fee-only practices in my home state of Georgia who weren’t beholden to a big bank or brokerage firms. There were even fewer like me, who appreciated working with younger professionals and business owners—often friends, or friends of friends, who may not yet have the huge nest eggs other advisors require. As my clients and I have grown together through the years, we’ve also branched out geographically, as the Troika community is now located all over the country.

Big Business, Little Business

My father has worked for a small family-owned banana-distribution company, which was founded in 1908, for nearly 60 years. My wife, a CPA, works for a much larger family-owned restaurant company headquartered in Atlanta, giving me a glimpse into corporate life. Combined with my experience founding and growing my own business, these family ties have afforded me a good view of small, mid-sized, and multi-billion-dollar business operations. By now, there aren’t many financial planning scenarios I haven’t encountered among owners, employers, and employees alike.

Family Fun Time

If it involves Georgia sports—the Bulldogs, the Falcons,
the Braves—we’re there.

I also try to exercise as much as possible, although our two young daughters take up most of our free hours at this point in our lives. Fortunately, we love the time we spend with them as we watch their personalities grow. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention Sadie, our golden retriever and favorite home office mate; she insisted she appear on our website.
